How is the Omega program different from the CORE program at Lane Tech?
The Omega Honors Program is specifically designed for students who LOVE HUMANITIES (art, literature, theater, history, music, etc). Omega has a unique curriculum with a focus on the humanities, with a purposeful and continuous collaboration between History and English courses. For example, the novels and nonfiction that are read in their English courses will be directly aligned to the concepts in their history courses, which will serve to better prepare our students for their AP exam at the end of the year. In addition, as students progress from grade level to grade level, it is mandatory that they take humanities electives. As seniors, all Omega Honors Program students concurrently take a history elective, and an additional humanities elective to better refine their interests in specific fields. For more information on our elective courses, please visit our course offerings page on the Lane Tech website!
Is the Omega Honors program harder than the Honors program?
The Omega Honors Program and general honors program are equally as challenging. For both programs students are required to master the same knowledge and skills necessary in each class and grade level. However, it must be noted that Omega Honors Program students will take at least six Advanced Placement classes and do have an additional tasks of participation in the Omega Workshops, Omega Day of Service, and Omega Humanities Festival. Therefore, Omega requires students to spend additional time and commitment accomplishing these tasks.
Is there are different grading scale for Omega?
Omega has the same grading scale as the general honors program. All honors classes are graded on a 5.0 scale (A=5, B=4…). All regular classes are graded on a 4.0 scale. All AP classes are graded on a 6.0 scale. Lane Tech uses the CPS grading scale: A:100-90. B:89-80, C:79-70, D:69-60, F:59-0.
I’m not really interested in the humanities, but I want to be in the most challenging program at Lane Tech. Is this program right for me?
Omega is a program for students who LOVE HUMANITIES, therefore it is recommended that students enjoy these fields. For students who prefer STEM (science, technology, engineering, math), the Alpha program might be a better fit. If you are someone who does not want to commit to a particular area of study, our CORE Honors program is a good fit for you.
Ultimately, students in Omega should be excited to be in a cohort of students who enjoy discussing issues in their English and History courses. Most of our students have future goals of continuing their education in business, English, economics, history, law, psychology, politics, urban planning, music, theater, writing, and education among other fields. Even if you don’t know what career path you are headed towards, you must truly love the humanities to enjoy being in the program.
If I decide the Omega program isn’t right for me, can I quit the program?
The Omega Honors Program is a 4-year curriculum path. We highly discourage students from quitting the program once they have been admitted. Quitting a few weeks into the program or mid-year is a major problem because Omega Honors Program students have a uniquely designed curriculum in History and English. Transferring from an Omega class to a non-Omega class will be a major difference and may result in the student being lost or having to make up weeks of missed work. Therefore, quitting the program does not guarantee placement in the general honors program, since we can only place students into classes that are not already full.
If I decide not to apply now, can I apply as a Sophomore?
You can, but the Omega Honors Program builds on knowledge, skills, and concepts learned from year 1 to year 4. It also depends on the availability of seats in the cohort.
Will taking fewer science or math courses have a negative effect on my college applications?
Unlike other curriculum paths, Omega students have a choice of taking either four years of science AND/OR math. Students are afforded the opportunity to replace this course with another humanities course. However, students can still take other STEM courses with one of their available electives. With that being said, selective universities are looking for students who are able to balance their intellectual interests along with taking academically rigorous courses. You should bear in mind that many other selective colleges do have minimum course requirements for entering students. It is best to research each school individually.
